The City of El Lago, Bounded on two sides by lakes, the city is aptly named El Lago, the city of “the lake”. The City of El Lago was incorporated in 1961 and is administered by an elected Mayor and Council. With a population of 3,075 (2000 Census), the community consists of some 900 single family residences in the subdivisions of El Lago, El Lago Estates and Taylorcrest. The city also has one elementary school, 42 businesses, four condominium complexes and two apartment complexes along NASA Road One, a City Hall, Fire and Police Stations, Masonic Lodge and a church — all in an area approximately one square mile.
The residents of El Lago attend schools within the Clear Creek Independent School District. In 2009 there were twenty-two homes sold. The average residential single family home in El Lago is 2000 – 2500 square feet with lot sizes ranging from 8000 square feet to 12,000 square feet and the sale prices of homes in 2009 was between $140,000 to $230,000.

City of El Lago sits on the site of one of the main hides-outs for the famed pirate and war hero “Jean Lafitte”. After American authorities captured most of Lafitte’s pirating fleet, Lafitte was granted a pardon in return for his helping General Andrew Jackson defend New Orleans against the British in 1815.
In 1976, Renee Magee, 17-year old El Lago resident, was the only Texas resident chosen for a slot on the US Olympic Swim Team. Her performance in the Woman’s 100 Meter Backstroke earned fourth place in the semi-finals in Montreal, Canada.
Past Mayor, Brad Emel, is El Lago’s longest running Mayor with a total of 12-years served.
Two of Three parks in the City are named after El Lago Astronauts…Neil Armstrong Park, next to city hall, and Ron McNair Memorial Park…named in his memory after he was tragically killed when the space shuttle Challenger exploded just 73 seconds after launch in 1986.
El Lago has survived three major hurricanes: Hurricane Carla (1961); Hurricane Alicia (1983) and Hurricane Ike (2008)
